Today we bring you one of the printers that we believe can be a benchmark for many users in the coming months, the Anycubic Kobra S1 Combo

We recently reviewed the Anycubic Kobra 3 Combo which we thought was a great machine… and this Kobra S1 Combo comes to further improve this Kobra series from Anycubic.

In case you don’t know, Anycubic, which is already a veteran in the 3D world, has a wide range of both FDM and SLA models that we invite you to discover on its website.

Anycubic Kobra S1 Combo

A functionality that is beginning to spread in the 3D community is the need for a multifilament device either for our parts to have different colors, to automate and simplify filament change, to improve support interfaces using different types of filaments for a better finish, etc…

Anycubic in this section with its ACE Pro, which is part of the Anycubic Kobra S1 Combo, has done an excellent job of implementing the system as well as improving and simplifying it as we will see later.

If we go into the purely machine features we will see that this new Anycubic Kobra S1 Combo is a remarkable machine and with a format not very common in Anycubic… CoreXY kinematics for higher speed without affecting print quality, closed to work safely and with certain types of filaments supported without any problem…

These are just some of its general characteristics and we will give you more detail below.

ACE Pro

Let’s start with, perhaps, one of the most remarkable features of this printer from Anycubic… the ACE Pro short for Anycubic Color Engine Pro, in this case a slightly improved version of the one we saw in the Anycubic Kobra 3 Combo.

Basically, the ACE Pro is an accessory that can store up to 4 spools of filament and that, automatically managed from the printer, will feed our printer in an automated way and without user assistance.

The operation of the ACE Pro is quite simple, it provides the filament of the installed spools through 4 PTFE tubes that reach a hub located on the back of the Anycubic Kobra S1 Combo.

Anycubic allows the simultaneous use of two of these ACE Pros to be able to use up to 8 filaments in our prints to have more options for use in our creations.

In addition, thanks to its sensors, it allows us to detect filament jams or lack thereof, which will allow us to manage our prints in these events in an agile and reliable way, even automatically continuing our printing using another spool of filament.

The ACE Pro also has an integrated drying system that will allow us to keep our filaments always in optimal conditions thanks to its double 200 W PTC heating system allowing to reach up to 55 °C as well as a compartment to put desiccant to maintain the filaments.

The ACE Pro supports a wide variety of filaments such as PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, PET, PA, PC, PP, HIPS but like most systems it does not get along well with flexible filaments such as TPU.

Likewise, it is not advisable to use it with filaments that are too rigid or too fragile such as PLA-CF/GF, PLA Silk since they can damage or break during printing through the ACE Pro.

It is also advisable to use plastic spools and not cardboard since these can cause filament traction to fail. Anycubic has adapters to solve this for its brand coils.

Another improvement that we have seen compared to the previous version of the ACE Pro that we tested is the inclusion of guides at the top that will prevent certain movements in the coils.

It also has an RFID tag reader system, for those compatible filament spools, which will allow the ACE Pro itself to adjust the profiles directly thanks to the information on these tags.

Características Kobra S1

Going into the characteristics of the machine we will start by highlighting its CoreXY kinematics with a generous print volume of 250*250*250 mm and having very contained dimensions of the machine that will allow us to install it practically anywhere.

In terms of performance/speed, the Anycubic Kobra S1, thanks to its mechanical design and software, will allow us to print at speeds of up to 600 mm/s with up to about 20000 mm/s² of maximum accelerations… 
although the recommended for optimal results are 300 mm/s depending on the characteristics of our parts and filaments of the project.

For example, we have among the test files the typical benchy that is printed in about 15 minutes, using the appropriate high-speed filament.

If we look at the extrusion system we have some more than interesting features, which make this Anycubic Kobra S1 Combo very powerful and versatile:

  • We have a hotend with the capacity to reach up to 320ºC, perfect for working with certain technical materials. On the other hand, we have a printing platform that can reach up to 120ºC and also has a rough magnetic surface with excellent adhesion.
  • The nozzle assembly replacement system, which includes the heater/sensor/fuser/nozzle/barrel, can be replaced quickly and without tools thanks to the anchoring system used and which you can see in the video above
  • The barrel is made of an aerospace-grade ceramic composite which will improve temperature resistance and offer low friction.
  • By default the Kobra S1 comes with a 0.4 mm hotend but we have 0.2/0.6/0.8 mm options.

  • The fan system has also been cared for and adapted with 4 fans
    In the part of the layer fan we have the one mounted on the head and an auxiliary one on the side of the printer. 
    We have another fan to cool the hotend and we have a room for filtering using a carbon filter to activate the air inside the printer.

We also have other very interesting features that will improve the quality of our prints:

  • We have a self-leveling system, LeviQ 3.0, which will allow us to compensate for deviations in our bed as well as an automatic z-offset adjustment… Leveling has never been easier, simpler, and more reliable.
  • We also find sensors, accelerometer, for vibration compensation, adjusting the machine in an optimal way to obtain the highest quality in our prints.
  • On the other hand, we have a new dynamic flow compensation system… To be honest, we haven’t found much information about it.

Moving on to the options for using and managing the machine, we have some interesting features as well:

  • The printer is very fast and in just about 15 minutes we can have it up and running.
  • It’s not an excessively noisy machine in standard print mode at around 46 dB, which using the slowest silent mode drops to around 44 dB… however, it should also be noted that the ACE Pro, especially when we have the heater for this ignition, is a bit noisy as well.
  • We also have a generous 4.3″ screen to control the machine locally, with a very friendly interface and with many options… although perhaps depending on the type of user some options are missing.
  • Ease of cleaning the enclosure, it may seem silly but it is somewhat cumbersome in other machines, we have an opening that facilitates the cleaning of impression remains.

  • On the other hand, and since we have an integrated camera, we can use the AI detection function for failures during printing.
  • Monitoring of belt tensioning to ensure optimal operation of the machine.
  • Current failure recovery function, a function that is not always perfect, and can save us an impression in case of this type of failure.

Nowadays, with the democratization of 3D printing, a very important section is the ecosystem and management of the machine. Anycubic is probably one of the ones that has the best, without being perfect, implemented in its products:

  • Anycubic Slicer Next, although we are not very fans of each manufacturer making a fork/clone, Anycubic’s laminator based on OrcaSlicer and in terms of options and use is one of the best today. We also have LAN or remote printing using the Anycubic Cloud.
  • Function to exclude objects during printing, although this functionality is not enabled in a general way, it is expected that during Q1 it reaches everyone, it is a very interesting option when during our printing of multiple objects one begins to fail and we can exclude it from the printing in progress without affecting the rest.

  • Anycubic App for mobile devices, which will allow us to monitor/control in real time our prints and printer from anywhere as long as we connect the printer to the internet and associate it with our Anycubic account.
  • Makeronline, the Anycubic portal where we will find thousands of models to print either directly or by downloading to our slicer.

Anycubic Kobra S1 Unboxing

Now that we have detailed information on the most important features and functions of the Anycubic Kobra S1 Combo, we are going to begin with the start-up, which, as we already told you, is a very quick and simple process.

The Anycubic Kobra S1 Combo kit has a considerable weight, about 32 Kg, so we advise you to handle it with the help of someone.

Everything comes perfectly packaged, we will also highlight that the Kobra S1 comes practically assembled, in addition to including all the accessories and material necessary to carry out the assembly, first tests and maintenance.

  • Once we have removed the machine from the packaging and opened the front door we will see that all the components are inside the printer, at the top under the lid we will find brief instructions on how to correctly remove all the components from the kit. 
    We start by removing the two screws on the front piece that are conveniently marked and that anchor the ACE Pro securely for transport.

  • Once we have removed the anchors of the ACE Pro we extract it from the top of the printer and to remove the front anchor piece we remove the 4 screws that we have indicated and that anchor this piece to the base of the printer as you can see in the following screenshots.

  • We remove the protective foam and take out the accessory box, we will take the opportunity to remove the anchor flanges from the head and the protection it has.

  • We will install the activated carbon filter for air filtration in its internal compartment.

  • The next step will be to install the 4 PTFE tubes for the passage of the filament to the back of the ACE Pro, in this case it is important to install the blue safety washers. PTFEs have two markings so you can see that the tubing was inserted correctly. 
    Next, we will install the filament hub on the back of the Kobra S1 using two screws and connect the ACE Pro cable to the connector that is right next to it. 
    Once anchored we will connect them in the same way we did previously on the ACE Pro but this time to the filament hub. The order is not important in this case.

  • With the ACE Pro already connected to the power and turned on from its switch on the back we will proceed to install and charge the filament spools, we advise you to place the desiccant in the available container to help keep the filaments in perfect condition. 
    The filament loading process is very simple, simply by inserting the filament into the inlet, the system will load it automatically.

The following steps will be assisted by the instructions from the screen:

  • We will select the language of the interface
  • We will configure our WiFi network and link with our Anycubic account
  • We will insert the USB that comes with the kit into the connector on the right side of the printer
  • We will perform bed leveling and z-offset
  • Resonance/vibration test to adjust settings

Now we can start printing, we recommend as a first impression one of the tests/objects that are included in the USB/memory to verify that everything works correctly.

In our case, as a first impression we made the typical benchy that came out with a good quality despite using a filament that we had from other tests.

Anycubic Kobra S1 Combo tests and user experience

After a few weeks of intensive use with the Anycubic Kobra S1 Combo we couldn’t be more satisfied with the performance of the machine.

After making the benchy that we showed you above we went directly to use some other model that was included in the printer itself, as we always comment that we try to simulate the user experience we skipped a step that we always do, and it was not entirely satisfactory since it ended up separating from the bed in the middle of printing.

With this I want to emphasize as we always do the importance of cleaning the printing surfaces that come with the printers as they may not be in the best condition… clean it with soap and water to make sure it doesn’t hurt.

The second aspect to emphasize is the importance of rolling mill tests and adjustments, these tests are generic with adjustments of flow, temperature and other options that do not have to go well with our use or materials we use… Doing basic fit tests is very important!!

Also tell you that before cleaning or performing basic tests we launched other example pieces and reprinted this one after coming out correctly.

The next logical step is usually to prepare our own pieces and this is where we have had a pleasant surprise that we already saw with the Kobra 3 Combo… Anycubic’s new rolling mill, Anycubic Slicer Next, is based on our beloved Orcasilcer!! which in addition to having most of the options integrates with Anycubic remote management and we have options obviously for multicolor/filament printing.

In addition, we have the profiles of all Anuycubic machines as well as their filaments, which is always an excellent starting point to, through tests that we can generate from the laminator, finish adjusting parameters such as temperature/flow/shrinkages that will depend in some case on the filament or type of parts we make.

It is important to say that Anycubic Slicer Next is in continuous development and is currently available only for Windows systems, although it will soon be available for MacOS as well.

It would be ideal for Anycubic to make the effort not only to create its customized version of Orcaslicer but also to provide it with all its profiles in addition to its remote management integration.

Once we adjusted both the print profile and the filaments we were using, we can only say that it is a real joy of a machine without a single printing failure during the rest of the tests and the ones we had were caused by human error.

Already during the initial installation process we linked our Anycubic Kobra S1 Combo with our Anycubic account and we were able to enjoy remote monitoring from its App that is improving every day and offering an improved user experience.

Printing parts in multicolor/filament:

The use of different colors or filaments in our prints is something that allows us finishes and projects almost without limits but… They have a price that we are basically going to summarize in two that are the ones that seem to us the most important:

  • printing time can be much longer compared to monofilament prints due to filament change processes and will depend on the number of filaments.
  • filament expenditure can be considerably large, sometimes even more than that used in the part itself. 
    In this case we have different options to reduce this either by adjusting the purging options from the screen, using options such as purge in fill or sacrificial parts where we will use part of that filament instead of purging it or spending it in purge tower or depending on the part being smart when applying changes or making clones of the parts to reduce filament waste when.
  • points of failure/issues, 3D printing is a process where many things can fail so generating certain extra processes such as filament changes can increase the risk of failure in different ways.

Filament waste of some of our prints, and always trying to minimize as much as possible.

Another important aspect is that currently in the version of Anycubic Slicer Next we do not have the fine purging settings available, which is also something that will allow us to adjust the filament output even more.

Even taking into account the above, we will have a series of important benefits such as the possibility of taking out parts with designs that avoid subsequent post-processing in reference to the paint, the use of specific filaments for printing support interfaces to improve the finish of overhangs/bridges, the process of changing from one filament to another is less cumbersome and automated, etc…

In addition to spending a few Kg of PLA doing all kinds of multicolor/filament projects, we got more technical filaments such as ASA/ABS, where the Anycubic Kobra S1 Combo behaved in a sensational way, thanks to its robust extrusion system and its enclosure, we carried out projects of quite a size and many hours of printing without problems.

In addition, thanks to its air filtration system, we had a working environment with a low level of annoying odors that can cause this type of filament, depending on the brand.

After a few hours of printing and a few spools of filament we already have our portable system for our travel painting set!!!

Another aspect that we liked was its self-leveling system, LeviQ 3.0, which with its compensation in the deviations of our bed in addition to an automatic z-offset adjustment… They have always given us the first layers of quality.

The textured magnetic platform has performed excellently in the adhesion of our works.

This type of machine, due to the speeds they work, is not usually silent… anyway, this Anycubic Kobra S1 Combo has seemed very acceptable to us generally although in the case that we use the heating system of the ACE Pro the noise levels increase.

In any case, we have three speed modes that will allow you to adjust the configuration of the speed and significantly reduce the noise level of the machine.

During the testing process we received some OTA firmware updates, directly from the internet we do not have to do cumbersome processes, which solved some small problems and improved the use of the machine.

One of the problems we encountered was that random access to the camera was not possible since it indicated that it was not connected, being able to recover it simply by restarting the printer.
Those issues were gone after one of the firmware upgrades.

Regarding the AI features, we weren’t able to simulate or make them jump during our testing and use of the machine, so we can’t give you much more information about it.

Anycubic Kobra S1 Combo review

Now that we have seen how the Anycubic Kobra S1 Combo works, we would like to analyze a little more in detail some parts and functions of this printer.

Kinematics/Construction

The kinematics of this Anycubic Kobra S1 Combo is CoreXY anchored in a metal chassis using double radial guides on the sides for Y movements, double X for head movement and joining the whole set with injected plastic parts with a high-quality feeling.

As for the Z axis, we have a single motor that, by means of a synchronization belt and a curious tension system, and which is theoretically monitored to verify its correct tensioning, allows us to have three axes where to anchor the kinematics of the bed, giving great stability to the whole.

At the design level of the machine we liked it a lot, honestly, but in the end it is a bit personal to each one. We have correct qualities and finishes, we will only highlight that both the upper cover and the front door are made of plastic, something that on the other hand we have not disliked at all, in addition to being relatively well sealed to avoid thermal leaks as much as possible.

A detail that we have found to be a great success is the interior design that has an opening to be able to easily clean the debris that always ends up falling.

Extrusion system and printing platform

The extrusion system for us is one of the aspects of this machine that, although many people do not give it enough importance, we have found one of the highlights of this Anycubic Kobra S1 Combo taking into account the type of use it is intended for.

very functional and easy-to-maintain design perfect for any type of user with its quick and tool-free change of the nozzle/fuser/barrel assembly along with a good direct extrusion system and a good ventilation system.

In terms of performance, it is totally up to the characteristics of the machine and thanks to its ability to reach up to 320ºC it will give us a lot of play to be able to work with more demanding filaments.

We can also have different nozzle diameters to be able to adapt to our needs and projects without any problem.

We also have an auxiliary layer ventilation system that, supporting the main one of the print head, will allow us to work more effectively with certain filaments or higher speeds.

About Timelapse function:
– In order for us to make a timelapse of our prints, it is necessary to have a storage unit connected to the USB port that we can find on the right side of the printer.
– We will also have to indicate that we want to make a timelapse of the print when launching it either remotely or from the printer screen.
– Finally, and at the time of doing the review, to access the created videos we have to connect the USB storage used for recording the timelapse to our computerwe will find them in the Time-lapse-Video folder in the root of storage.

For example, in the last one applied, the ACE Pro was improved with adjustments to reduce the noise level during its operation and at the Kobra S1 level, the option to exclude objects during printing, dynamic flow adjustment and the ability to handle two ACE Pro to use up to 8 frames were implemented.

Anycubic is working hard to make this Kobra S1 Combo as polished as possible to its users, we can also see how these updates can solve problems or implement new features for users.

ACE Pro

Regarding the ACE Pro, and that we have not already discussed, we can easily manage it from the screen to indicate the type of filament, color, manage the heater, as well as enable the filament backup function.

With a good chassis and kinematics construction we have had an excellent response in speed, quality and reliability during our tests… which have not been few!! At the level of software, management and ecosystem of Anycubic we have also observed good progress making the user experience better, easier and simpler.

As we did with the Kobra 3 Combo, the ACE Pro continues to seem to us to be one of the best multifilament systems and the unit included in the Anycubic Kobra S1 Combo has small improvements to some of the weak points we saw in the previous version.
